In addition, massive rock formations and waterfalls create a stunning natural scenery. The forest is also equipped with various convenience facilities for visitors.
Travel Tips
Located on the northern slope of Mt. Jaewang, just above Samporam Recreation Area, Daegwallyeong Natural Recreation Forest is known as Korea’s first and one of the largest recreation forests capable of accommodating many visitors. The forest preserves the grandeur of nature while offering a harmonious blend of diverse woodlands and convenient facilities, making it an ideal place for families to relax and enjoy forest bathing.
In particular, the pine forest cultivated since the 1920s is regarded as one of the three most beautiful pine forests in Korea. Visitors can also follow the old Daegwallyeong trail from the forest to Mt. Jaewang or Banjeong, enjoying a scenic route through dense pine woods that creates a romantic atmosphere.
The forest is largely divided into two areas. The northern valley features facilities for group visitors, including camping decks, a forest education center, group lodgings, shower rooms, and a restaurant. The camping decks are surrounded by dense trees, providing natural shade so that no additional tarp is needed even in summer.
The southern valley, accessible via a steep pass, offers facilities for families such as recreational lodges, a water play area, campsites, and cooking areas. On clear days, the forest presents beautiful night views. At the summit of Daegwallyeong, the former highway rest area houses the New & Renewable Energy Exhibition Hall, and across the road begins the hiking trail to Seonjaryeong along the Baekdudaegan ridge—both highly recommended spots to visit.
Additionally, as Gangneung City is nearby, visitors can explore historical attractions such as Daegwallyeong Museum, Gyeongpodae Pavilion, and Ojukheon, while also enjoying the beautiful sea of Gangwon Province.
