  • Introduction
  • Yeongjin Village is located north of the lower stream of Yeongokcheon, where salmon return and fragrant sweetfish are abundantly caught. The name signifies “embracing the sea.” A traditional fishing ritual known as the Pungeoje (a ceremony for a bountiful catch) is held once every three years, on a selected day in the fourth lunar month. Yeongjin-ri is where streams flowing from Sogeumgang Valley and the Jingogae mountain range meet the sea. Across the stream lies Yeongok Beach, and right next to the port is Yeongjin Beach, making it a popular summer destination for visitors from other regions. Around 60 fishing households operate approximately 35 fishing boats, catching flounder and shellfish from February to October. Nearby ports include Jumunjin Port, located about 2–5 km by land and 2 km by sea. About 1 km west of the port, prehistoric burial mounds have been excavated and designated as cultural heritage sites, making it an excellent destination for family historical exploration.

  • Travel Tips
  • Yeongjin Port is famous for its abundant catch of high-quality fish, making it a popular destination for boat fishing enthusiasts. This is also why the Pungeoje ritual is held once every three years, offering visitors a unique cultural experience. The area where the sea meets the stream creates a mysterious and scenic atmosphere. Although Yeongjin Beach is not large, it is beloved by families and couples seeking a peaceful retreat. With around 60 fishing households catching flounder and shellfish, visitors are highly recommended to try grilled shellfish when visiting.

Nearby attractions include Gyeongpo Provincial Park, Jumunjin Port, and golf courses, making it worthwhile for travelers with cars to explore the area thoroughly. Gangneung is also famous for its diverse food offerings. Visitors can enjoy fresh sashimi and snow crab at the port, try soft tofu in Chodang Sundubu Village, savor popular handmade burgers, visit coffee factories for freshly roasted coffee, dine at renowned spicy seafood noodle restaurants, or explore Jungang Market for dakgangjeong (sweet crispy chicken), ice cream hotteok, and tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties).

Beyond its ports and beaches, Gangneung offers many other attractions. Visitors can experience traditional culture and rural life at places such as Hak Village or Haesari Village. Families traveling with children are encouraged to make reservations in advance for unique hands-on experiences.
